History
History begins with a bang children -
think of bursting a balloon with a pin.
Before that there was nothing at all, really.
That's how the universe begins.
Then came flying gases and particles -
things so small they can never be seen
except through a microscope, a special machine.
The stars came next, glowing and bright
like the shine of the warm sun bringing morning and night.
Then planets were formed - like Jupiter and Mars
and the Earth - tiny beside the infinite stars.
Over millions of years oxygen was produced
and cellular life went on the loose.
Soon the sea was full, some fish got evicted,
so they walked on the land and started to picnic.
Yes children, it's true, that's how life began -
from these strange origins came woman and man.
But first remember the dinosaurs -
they ruled the earth for millions of years
before a meteorite came and wiped them out.
A meteorite is a rock from space children
and if another one comes there can be little doubt -
but close your books; I hear the school bell ringing;
tomorrow I'll tell the rest; now it's time for singing.
