Geography

Today we begin with the earth
a blue ball which hangs in space
where we live, us, the human race.
You, me, this is where we are
on the earth, circling round a star.
All of space is very black

but the earth is green and blue
the earth is the planet of colours.
Look out through your eyes children
and you'll see that it's true:
the earth is the planet of colours.
On the map the earth looks flat

but in space it's really round.
Though we hang upside down into space
the ground is always beneath us:
that's down to gravity children,
rather difficult to explain,
difficult even for teachers.

Look at the map children and see
that the earth is mainly sea:
all the blue colour is water.
And we are sons and daughters
of the rivers and oceans:
we are water's risen motion

sprung up from the floods of the world
many, many years ago,
and the blood in each boy and girl
is really water borrowed from the world
whirling round your human frame
till the earth calls it back again.
